Tonight’s Harborne Ward Committee was told that the planning application for Harborne’s new swimming pool is finished and ready to go, and will be submitted at the end of this week, which is excellent news.
The Ward meeting was shown Birmingham City Council’s computerated generated pictures of what the new swimming pool will look like, plus the plans of both the ground floor and first floors of the proposed new building.
The full business case will be submitted to Cabinet on September 28th 2009. The project therefore continues to be on time. It is still proposed that, pending the granting of planning permission of course, the current pool will close at the end of the February half term. Demolition is planned to start at the end of March 2010, with the building on a new pool starting in summer 2010.
The progress made on this project is all down to the efforts of the Conservative and Lib Dem groups who are running Birmingham City Council. Our current pool was badly maintained during 20 years of Labour control which is why it now has to be rebuilt. At the same time Labour closed the Monument Road baths (which served North Edgbaston) and never rebuilt them. All in all, Labour had an appalling record with regard to looking after our swimming facilities which the current Conservative led Council administration is now endeavouring to put right.
