Visiting Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham

Today I was invited by a Trustee of the Ronald McDonald House Charity to visit the accommodation which they are are currently building beside Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the city centre.

The Ronald McDonald House Charity supports the families of children who are in hospital by providing accommodation for them near to the hospitals where their children are being treated. This can be invaluable for families whose homes are a long distance away.

In Birmingham the charity is currently building a 60 room block beside the Children’s Hospital. I was shown around – seeing the hotel style rooms which will be available to families, along with kitchens and day rooms where they can make themselves meals, and sit to eat. The block is six floors high and we went right to the roof (pictured) from where there is a spectacular view of the city.

The building will have large tiles in shades of green and grey on it when it is completed (some of which I saw today) and it will be lit up so that it will become quite a city landmark.

The Ronald McDonald House at Birmingham Children’s Hospital is due to be completed in November this year. Just before that, the charity will be starting work on their second Birmingham project – a Ronald McDonald House beside the Women’s Hospital in Metchley Park Rd, Edgbaston. This project will run alongside the new neonatal unit which is also planned for the Women’s Hospital. A charity appeal for fund raising for that has recently been launched and I am one of the patrons.
