Today I was invited by the Birmingham Chinese Festival Committee to join the celebrations to welcome in the Chinese New Year – which this year is the Year of the Tiger.
From a room at the Ibis Hotel, we watched as the traditional Dragon Dance, accompanied by firecrackers, opened the proceedings. This was followed by the welcoming of the Chinese God of Wealth (pictured) by the Birmingham Chinese Women’s Association.
After that there was acrobatics, Chinese opera and even a Dragon Dance on poles, while we enjoyed a delicious Chinese lunch.
The Tiger is a natural born leader and is said to symbolise power and passion. Famous Tiger people include the Queen, Agatha Christie, Marilyn Munroe, Stevie Wonder and Beatrix Potter.
