This afternoon I’ve been to Sandwell Council House for an update on the new stand alone Midwife Led Maternity Unit for Sandwell. The unit is to be called Halcyon, and will work in conjunction with the Serenity co-located Midwife Led Unit at City Hospital, Birmingham and the more traditional labour ward also at City Hospital. Although Halcyon will be in Sandwell, it is expected that some Birmingham mothers will give birth there.
Halcyon is due to open on October 11th, with the first deliveries expected from October 31st onwards. 150 deliveries will be expected there the first year, rising to 400 a year in year 3.
New midwives have been recruited and the project is on-time and on-budget – so it was good news all round today.
